Hibiscus hardwood cuttings, rooted in willow tea.

Willow (

Salix

spp.) trees contain a natural rooting hormone – as well as antifungal and antibacterial compounds – in their bark and leaves. If you steep willow tissues overnight in hot water, you can use the water the next day to encourage cuttings of certain plants to grow roots.

Some plants, like these hibiscus, will grow roots in the water, if you keep changing it. Some cuttings should just be soaked overnight in willow water, and then rooted in a growth medium the next day.
